Beyond the medium of anime, I consider Grave of The Fireflies among the most heartbreaking movies I've ever seen and Princess Mononoke among the best movies I've ever seen. From Laputa and Totoro to Kaguya and now Marnie, I've loved the many movies Ghibli has made over the years.
When marnie was there ending movie#
Knowing this is to be the last full-length movie from Ghibli leaves me feeling a bit empty.

Thank you for another wonderful movie, Studio Ghibli. As the ending song played alongside the credits and more beautiful shots, I felt fulfillment. Now these many emotions aren't necessarily the focus of this movie, but this is what resonated with me the most as I watched it. This movie captures all of these emotions with maturity, including the many forms of love familial, friendship, and romantic(although just slightly/ambiguously). Fear, anger, grief, happiness, worry, loneliness, and most importantly, love. What it has is a large spectrum of emotions. This movie is very emotional, and I don't mean "the feels" rip your heart out emotional. I remember making yuri jokes when the first previews for this movie came out however many months ago, but this is an emotional work and those jokes do it quite the disservice. Watch it, at least if you appreciate smaller movies about smaller moments, and enjoy the feeling of sadness media can instill within us. This shot from that moment covers exactly how I felt. I had to pause for a couple of minutes as I watched, as emotions overcame me. It's not exactly an "Up! Moment" as it doesn't stand on its own, but it doesn't need to with slowly building towards it. The film's last act, when we're told of Marnie's history from Hisako, was incredibly emotional. It also works perfectly on the meta-level as an analogy to bidding farewell to Ghibli, and one can read into the film references to Alice in Wonderland, the story about the girl who couldn't stop dancing in the fairies' banquet, Persephone's tale, and even Ghibli's own Spirited Away.

This film is about accepting your past, and accepting your self, and moving forward while on one hand forgetting the past, while being embraced by it. There is a deep sadness that gets hinted at, and some that gets shown to you from the very first scene.Īnd this is all about uncovering and peeling back the magic, and the sadness. There is a deep sadness you can sense in the film, even as some of the characters do nothing but smile for most of its duration. This film is just so pretty, and watching it I was filled with sadness over not getting to watch new movies with the Ghibli distinct style, of the ever so slightly mussy/wind-tussled hair.

This film with its themes of loss and relationship, of living through said loss, and the focus on understated relationships/personal moments reminds me of Hotarubi no Mori e (Into the Forest of Fireflies' Light), A Letter to Momo, Wolf Children, and the underwatched Ghibli Whispers of the Heart. I'm actually planning to write a longer post about it, hopefully in the next 3 weeks (schoolwork, many papers to write, etc.), specifically on how this film is a perfect metaphor for bidding farewell to Studio Ghibli, and how it relates and corresponds to Miyazaki's films, the sense of wonderment and its loss. I'm going to mostly repost what I said of this film in the relevant "What did you watch this past week that isn't currently airing" thread, two weeks ago. How are these things related to Marnie? Just who is this strange girl? Anna has trouble remembering things, and even blacks out. It is there that she meets Marnie.Īlthough she finds Marnie to be the first kid her age that she gets along with, there is something mysterious about her-Marnie even tells Anna to keep her a secret from the town. She finds herself drawn to a seemingly abandoned house across the water, which can only be walked to during low tide. After moving to the countryside to her family, separated from her mother, she spends her time walking around the area and sketching. Due to anxiety attacks, a doctor suggests that Anna move somewhere more relaxing. MyAnimeList: Omoide no Marnie (Memories of Marnie).Īnna, a young girl living in Sapporo, is having trouble with her classmates. Hopefully we'll get it to have more than 4,500 under "watched" on MAL. No organized discussion for the movie was out, so let's go. Fansubs have been out since March 21st, at least (ripped official subs + typesettings/honorifics). This movie, Ghibli's latest and last is receiving a limited release in the United Stated since May 22nd.
